What beers are brewed locally?

March 04, 2004

There are two brewers in Panama:

Nacional are based in Panama City and Barú in Chiriqui.

Nacional brew the following beers:

Barú brew:

The Barú web site also lists Cristal, Tecate and Guiness. Tecate and Guiness are definitely imported. I have never seen Cristal in Panama.

Of these my favorite is Balboa and if really, really cold on a beach Soberana.

All of the beers are pilsners (lagers) and none of them are overly complex.

Prices in supermarkets for most local beers (cervezas nacionales in Spanish) are roughly 35-40c a can. In small Chinese neighborhood stores they cost no more than 50c. If they try to charge you more argue.

In the city most restaurants charge you $1-$2 per beer and it will often be bottled. Pints are also available for about $2. In nightclubs expect around $2 per bottle.

Dont confuse a English style “pint” with the local “pinta”, which you often see outside small shops and cantinas in the countryside. Pinta’s are normally bottles to be drunk on the premises. I often see them for around 25c outside the city.
