What does Open Bar mean?

March 04, 2004

Night clubs that offer Open Bar have free drinking either all night long or until a set time. This is a long standing tradition in Panama City and some clubs run Open Bar almost every night. In combination with ladies night it can be a very cheap night out.

When it is ladies night, ladies normally enter free until a certain time (most often 11pm) they are also covered by the open bar, so they have a very economical night.

Guys normally pay between $5-$10 cover for the same purpose. Popular places for open bar are “Bacchus” very close to Marriott and Rock Cafe in Marbella opposite the Sheraton.

Normally these two places offer ladies night and open bar on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Possibly Fridays as well.

Rock Cafe has open bar all night long at Bacchus it normally ends at 3 am. Big points to you as a non Panamanian if you still want to drink after 3am ;-).

The drinks available are White Rum, Seco and Vodka. Sometimes you will see Open Cerveza mentioned, which means draught beer is also available. The drinks are normally served in plastic tumblers with lots of ice and considerably more liquor than mixer.

My favorite of the two places is Bacchus as its a bit larger, with less smoke. Also the bar staff are a lot friendlier here than in Rock Cafe.

Often the more hip nightclubs also have special promotions with open bar. Keep an eye in the media or check out sites such as Dealante for news on coming events.

I once was at Rock Cafe in Panama City some years ago. I tell u: open bar is a great thing. And the music was OK as well...

And Carta Vieja is still the best!
