What mobile phone networks are available?

March 04, 2004

Panama has two major mobile operators:

Cable and Wireless run a GSM850 network with GPRS for data and Bell South run a CDMA 1xRTT semi 3G network.

Both operators still also run old fashioned US style TDMA, so if you have an old one lying around it should work.

Which phones do they have available, you might ask? Their web sites are both hopefully out of date. Really you need to check the stores. I’ve written earlier about Mobile Phone Marketing in Panama and it’s still pretty much as bad at the time of writing.

The good thing is that Cable & Wireless recently introduced prepaid GSM, which means you can pick up decent phones now at decent prices at some of the many electronics stores.

Coverage is good in the city and the speed of the GPRS on Cable and Wireless is decent.
