What is a Peso?

March 10, 2004

You will often hear Panamanians using the term “Peso” in such phrases like:

¿Tiene un Peso?

A “peso” (pronounced “peh-soh”) is a 50 cent coin. The term goes back to the old Colombian peso.

Another Panamanian slang term is "buf." It means a 5-cent piece, because US nickels used to have a "buffalo" on the reverse of the Indian-head nickel. As that coin is no longer minted, the term "buf" is dying out as the older generation dies out.
