Operating your Panamanian bank account

July 11, 2005

Sign up for online banking immediately and a Sistema Clave card. These things will make your daily banking much easier. The checking system works fairly well allthough I don’t really see the need for checks in Panama.

Many banks have refillable visa cards, that are normally easy to get and fund when you already have an account. This is generally preferable to other kinds of credit cards, as they neither require credit (difficult for expats) nor a large safety deposit. You just fill them up through your online banking.

For any kind of banking business, bring your passport. If you have any kind of immigration carnet or local driving license, you may be able to use these as well. But it really is safer to always carry your passport with you.
