Spanish English Food Dictionary

January 23, 2006

Continuing on with more food related postings, Salt Shaker has written a great Spanish-English Food Dictionary.

Here are a few additional Panamanian ones for the list:

Soda - Soda (It’s Gaseosa most other countries)
Patacones, (Tostones in Puerto Rico) - Double fried pressed plantains
Hojaldra - Fried dough
Poroto - Red bean
Guandú (Panamá), Gandules (Puerto Rico) - Pigeon peas
Culantro - This is not the same as Coriander or Cilantro
Falda - Skirt steak. The Panamanian variety is very tough though and used only for soup.
Ají Chombo - Scotch Bonnet/Habanero pepper
Souse - Pickled pigs feet
Sancocho - In Panamá clear chicken soup with culantro and yam. Other countries have different definitions.
Pepita de Marañon - Cashew
Ropa Vieja - Pulled stewed skirt steak

You forgot the delicious "ropa vieja" that could be prepared with skirt (falda) in Panama :)

You are so right Melissa.

Which reminds me of the fantastic Patacones con Ropa Vieja they used to make in Café Asis.

I've managed to save up roughly $87510 in my bank account, but I'm not sure if I should buy a house or not. Do you think the market is stable or do you think that home prices will decrease by a lot?
