What to do in Colon when visiting on a cruise?

January 26, 2006

The port city of Colon on the Caribbean entrance of the Panama Canal has a fantastic history and is a popular stop on Panama Canal Cruises, but there is really not a lot to do in the actual city of Colon. So where should you go on an excursion?

My recomendation is to go to Portobelo, which is a gem of a little town about an hour east of Colon.

For hundred or so years Portobelo was the main transhipment point for just about all the riches that went from the Spanish Pacific colonies to Spain. Due to this it has some incredible fortresses and fantastic colonial architecture set in one of the most beautiful bays of the world and surrounded by lush jungle.

Portobelo is great for both history buffs and nature lovers. I wrote a trip report Day trip to the Caribbean a while back which explains a bit more.
