Carnaval starts today

February 24, 2006

Today is the start of great music, parades, being soaked by the water truck as well as of course obscene amounts of seco and rum.

The carnavals in Panama are great fun. They are not the big show cases like Rio or Trinidad, but rather 100% audience participation street parties that last for nearly a week. Be prepared if you go that it can be an intense experience. Wear old and practice bringing your alcohol resistance level up a bit before going.

Most tourists go to the Panama City Carnaval which always has excellent international salsa and merengue artists performing side by side with Panamanian artists.

Most Panamanians try to go the Azuero peninsula where they have always had a a real strong tradition for Carnaval. I went to Las Tablas, Chitré and Los Santos in 2004 which was fantastic. The 3 of them are really close to each other so you can easily experience all of them. Las Tablas is no doubt the best of the 3 though.

Start planning for next year. It is worth a visit but you need to book hotels early.
