Escudo de Veraguas the unknown archipelago

March 06, 2006

Most people visiting and living in Panama have heard of the Bocas Del Toro and San Blas archipelagos on Panama’s Caribbean coast and of Las Perlas on the Pacific. Some have heard about Coiba, but almost no one have heard of Escudo de Veraguas.

This island group lies off the Caribbean coast between Bocas Del Toro and Colon. The whole coast is inhabited only by a few Indian tribes and there are zero facilities there.

Rick recently went there and has some great photos of the islands.

Basically from what I understand is that the sea surrounding it is very rough, but the actual islands are protected by reefs and are very close together which reminds me of photos I have seen from Palau in the pacific.

How to get there? Well besides going in your own boat the only two ways I have discovered are with Panama Jet Boat Explorer who also have fantastic photos or by helicopter with Helipan who have a reputation for fantastic service.
