Parque Metropolitano

June 15, 2006

While Panama has lots of rain forests, possibly the easiest and cheapest to visit while in Panama City is the Parque Metropolitano between El Dorado and Clayton. It is probably one of the most dramatic city parks you will ever find and well worth a morning or afternoon hike.

Any taxi driver can take you there. The entrance fee should be something in the range of $2-3 and helps maintain the park. Besides the beauty of the place the site used to be a repair workshop for the USAF during World War II and has lots of old plane parts lying around in the jungle.

The park rangers say the best time to see monkeys is early in the morning, but I have seen several of them once close to the highway that crosses through the park.

Otherwise the most fascinating wildlife that you are almost guaranteed seeing are butterflies and these most amazing ants that carry leaves on their back through the undergrowth.
